Things People Don't Like to Talk About

I haven't really done an indepth update in awhile. Lots of stuff has been going on in our lives lately, however. First of all, my brother came to town this weekend and we had a lot of fun catching up. Vivian was enthralled with Uncle Marc and I believe he felt the same way!

As for me, I've been up and down. When we were here in FL after Viv's birth and when we were in MN, I just didn't feel good. I was crying all the time and really not enjoying Vivian at all. In fact, I was convinced that she was a really hard baby who fussed all the time for me. (For everyone else, she was pretty good...but fussed a lot with me). Anyways, when we came back to FL a couple of weeks ago, I went in to my doctor. Sure enough, she diagnosed me with post-partum depression and was very glad that I called/came in right away. SO, here I am, 2.5 weeks later---taking Ativan when I feel anxiety and Zoloft every morning. Unfortunately, that means that I can no longer breastfeed---medicine would go to baby. But, the doctor said that since I was having so many issues with the milk, stopping was probably less stressful for me. Well, she got 5 weeks of the best food in the world, so I'm happy for that. I'm not crying anymore...in fact, Vivian has suddenly become very fun for me. She is starting to smile and loves to cuddle. She doesn't cry all the time with me. Probably just did that because I was so anxious and crying everytime she was with me. I feel a lot better about being a mom and I feel like I am able to handle things and roll with the punches again.

We're looking forward to our Alaska trip---cooler weather, here we come! (Whew!)
We're also looking forward to doing a little sightseeing in Seattle and Vancouver beforehand.

New Pics....

Not much new to report...Adam and I are just completely enveloped in trying to figure out parenthood. I guess you never REALLY figure it out, but at least get to a point where you feel you have a good handle on it. I think we've actually figured out a pattern...which is a little helpful.

6:30-8:30am---awake...occasionally dosing off
8:30-10:30---actively awake
10:30-1:30/2---nap...if we're lucky
2:00-5:00---fun time! awake, happy
5:00-8:00---Yikes! Don't make plans. Could be an angel, could be a fussbuster.
8/8:30-2:30am-sleep
2:30-3:15am--awake and very hungry
3:15-6:00am--sleep

Of course, just when we think we have her figured out, she throws us for a loop. But hey, it is a start! (Notice that Little Miss Newborn only takes one nap a day). Maybe that means she'll continue to sleep longer and longer through the night!

Money in the bank!

Yep... we deposited the $0.04 check from the mortgage company.

But, that's not all! I decided to clean out our safe and gather our birth certificates together so that we are somewhat organized for the cruise. We haven't gotten around to getting passports yet but we'll have to for next year when they change Canadian law. Anyways, what do I find at the bottom of the safe???? $100!!! SCORE! Gotta love finding money that you forgot about!

Vivian updates: She smiled....officially...more than once. She proved that she can sleep 5-6 hours at night. She's done it since we were in MN, but we're not holding our breath that this pattern will continue...although we are wishfully thinking that it might. She has perfected the "fake, I want attention" cry. Pathetic. She is very active and alert. Only takes one nap each day for about 3 hours.

Opening the Mail

We had the post office hold our mail while we were in MN. I managed to get through about half the stack so far.

We got the insurance/doctor bill notification. With dread, I open it up...YIKES! Babies cost a lot in those 48 hours! Oh, wait....phew...the insurance covered most of it....

Oh, wait! Here's a refund from Chase Mortgage Co. because of an overage in our escrow. Maybe that will cover the amount we will owe the hospital.... $0.04. Yep. That's right. 4 measly little cents. Why? Why send 4 MEASLY LITTLE CENTS. Gosh. Got my hopes up. Oh well.

Viv is adjusting back to FL life quite well. She is working on eating more at each meal and eating less often. She is down to a feeding before bed, one at night and one in the (very early) morning.

At 1 month, she is very alert, verbal and well adjusted. She seems to be very particular---likes things "just so". I have recently found that she enjoys the swing, even though we think it swings way too fast. She can roll over from her back to her side. She enjoys baths in her tub, but not so much if we give her one in a sink. She is NOT a nuk girl right now, but will take it when she is cuddling before bed sometimes.

It's Been Awhile!

We're back in FL...our trip went well, all things considered. We enjoyed seeing our family and many friends while there....guess that was Edith's plan, bringing us all together.

It is almost 11:00 and I think the little munchkin is awake in her crib....more later!

Sad News

Our grandma Edith passed away today (Sat.). She has been living with alzheimer's for quite some time now and we believe that she is in heaven with grandpa with all of her precious memories back. We will miss her dearly but know that she is happy now with the rest of her family and know that we will see her again when our time on earth is done.

On that same note, we will be in Minnesota on Monday. We're not sure when we will be returning to Florida. We'll be staying up north for awhile at least--maybe a week or two.

It is times like this when we remember how fragile and precious life is. If you haven't told someone you love them or haven't visited someone as much as you should, take the time---you never know how much time God has planned for you.

We love you all!

What a weekend!

We had an eventful weekend here....

My first day alone with Viv was on Friday---it went ok...we're still getting used to things here. She had her 2 week checkup...Dr. Kayaleh said she looks great, weighs 9lbs. 80z. (yikes!), grew 2 inches and is in the 90th percentile for weight, height and head circumference. She's very well proportioned! I think she's a little fussier than she should be...perhaps excess gas or something, but doc said everything looked normal!

We had 8th grade awards night on Friday night at school. Viv and I went with Adam to that. He had to present some art awards.

Saturday was a long day for me. I don't know how single moms do it. Adam was at Busch Gardens ALL day with the 8th graders. It is an end of the year trip for them and Adam got blessed with chaperone duty. So, off her went at 6:30am and didn't get back until after 7:00. But, he had fun and we survived.

THE BEST THING THOUGH, WAS THAT EVEN THOUGH HE WAS WIPED OUT AFTER A DAY OF CHASING KIDS THROUGH THE PARK AND IN 93 DEGREE HEAT, HE STAYED UP WITH VIVIAN ALL NIGHT SO THAT I COULD SLEEP FOR MULTIPLE CONSECUTIVE HOURS! WHAT A GUY!

Sunday...well, we planned on going to church, but we couldn't quite get out the door on time. Sorry, God. We tried. Viv and I went to the annual church picnic this afternoon. Adam stayed behind to get the rest of his grading done. (Last week of school is this week!)

When I got home, Adam and I spent some time trying to figure out how to soothe a fussy baby. Don't get me wrong...she doesn't have colic, but just seems really unhappy when she's awake. She cries often and straightens out her body in frustration. Can't quite figure this out.

Need Ideas....

1. Viv has her days and nights mixed up. Not cool for mommy.

2. She also seems to have an un-ladylike problem....gas? poops? Who knows? Lots of grunting and getting mad in the face....

Otherwise, she remains as cute as ever. And strong...I think she'll be rolling over in no time, seeing as though she likes being on her tummy so much! (If only she could tummy sleep right now, we'd be in heaven!)

Girls, you know who you are, have fun on your girls only weekend! Give your guys extra hugs and kisses for staying with the kids!

Sleep....IT IS NOT OVERRATED!

I don't know how I will do it...Adam is back at work, so he's not getting up through the night. My mom leaves tomorrow, so she won't be up with Viv in the morning. When am I going to sleep??? I'm feeling pretty anxious about the prospect of being left alone with Viv. Pretty scared, actually. I'm not sure I know what to do!

Also, does anybody know if a baby can eat too much? Don't they stop when they are full? She eats....ALL THE TIME! If you've read past blog entries, you will know that eating has been a rough area so far---combination of breastmilk and formula. I'm afraid she'll gain weight too fast. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

The Birth Story

Ok, ok....found some time to write my story....

Tuesday, May 2, 8:00pm

Contractions are getting stronger and we're excitedly anticipating the arrival of Baby Girl Rosenbaum. At this point, I knew I was dilated to a 4, at least, and contractions were coming every 6-7 minutes. This continued on throughout the night, sometimes closer together. I didn't find that this was unmanageable at all--in fact, I was getting an awful lot done around the house (because sleep wasn't happening any time soon).

Wednesday, May 3, 4:00am

Wow! Contractions are getting closer together--4 minutes apart and lasting longer. I knew that I needed to get antibiotics, so it was about time to go to the hospital. SO--I took a shower, packed my bag, woke up Adam and told him to get ready. We still weren't in a big hurry, I know this whole labor thing could take forever. He showered, shaved, etc. and we were off. We stopped at the gas station and then headed to school to drop off Adam's lesson plans for the week. On to Celebration Hospital we went....

8:00am

They checked me--yes, contractions were coming pretty strongly and they figured I was progressing well. Nope. 4 cm. Yikes. So, we got checked in. What was nice is that all my monitors were cordless and I didn't have to have them much, so I was free to move about the hospital. We walked....and walked.....and walked....enjoyed the gardens, checked the lunch menu, etc. Eventually I had to get an IV so I had to get to the room...and drag a pole around with me for the rest of the time. (yuck).

Morning, afternoon and night were quickly passing by. The length of time was certainly taking its toll on my tolerance level...exhaustion was setting in. I was focusing a lot more and concentrating on breathing that baby down. Around 9:00pm on Wed. night, contractions were very intense, but I wasn't dilating any further. My labor seemed to have stalled out at only 6cm dilation. We didn't have any progression... Truthfully, at this point, I was exhausted and couldn't stop shaking. I'm not sure where the shaking thing came from...

Around 11:30pm, they administered the dreaded epidural---I was still 6cm. Adam helped me make the decision that it be done, nausea or not, I was too exhausted to continue. (I had been awake for 42 hours, laboring for 27 at this point). The epidural hurt worse than anything I could have imagined and I absolutely hated losing feeling in the lower half of my body. Luckily though, I didn't throw up (although I was VERY dizzy).

Thursday, May 4, 2006

Once I was able to relax a little more and stop shaking, I progressed from a 6 to a 10 in 2.5 hours. I started pushing at 2:15am....pushed for a half hour, and out she came. All 8lbs. 13 oz. of her. I was extremely happy that I could feel her coming out---wasn't totally numb after all---and knew when and how to push. The doctor was surprised that she came out so quickly with the epi, but I wasn't. I knew what to do and did it. And she is beautiful. What a miracle and a joy.

All in all, it wasn't an ideal natural labor/delivery for me--I continued to be dizzy for a few days. I really feel that the hypnobirthing helped me stay focused for the first 27 hours, but pure exhaustion set in. I think I could have done it completely natural if labor had been shorter. It wasn't the pain/pressure at all.

Eating Issues...Resolved...

Viv went to the doctor on Tuesday for her first checkup. Doc was concerned that she was losing too much weight (she was down to 8lbs. 3oz.). It turns out that I don't produce enough milk, partly due to anemia. So, we're currently having to supplement with formula in addition to milk---not an ideal situation, but at least she's not crying from hunger. I'm still pumping in the meantime so she's getting as much milk as I can give her. We had a nightmare few days of constant crying (which we feel HORRIBLE about) before we all figured out what was going on. Most thought she was just a fussy/colicky baby. In actuality, she's such a mellow, peaceful baby so far...

We went back to the doctor today for a weight check---all is better, she gained 5 oz. back!

We're lovin' every minute of being with her and learning all about her. She's so vibrant and alert--tracks us pretty well with her eyes and LOVES her hands. She always has them up by her face and likes to suck on them as well. Her current favorite thing to do is sleep on daddy's chest during her morning nap. (I think that is his favorite thing too!). She sleeps well during the night and is a content little bug during the day. We couldn't be happier!

More pictures and a quick update!

Here's a quick update while Vivi Voo is sleeping on daddy (her favorite place!).
We got home on Saturday afternoon--they debated keeping her longer because of jaundice, but then checked her again and her levels had dropped :). Friday and Saturday night were both rough---she was super fussy and rightfully so...so many peaceful months with mom and then BAM!--lights, sounds, environments like never before!

Sunday night was GREAT! She fed at 9:00pm, 12:30am and 4:45am...otherwise, she slept soundly all night...yea! Now, if we could only be so blessed as to have that happen again!

Feeding has been a challenge, to say the least. Our girl is such a little drama queen...quite feisty...I DON'T HAVE A CLUE WHERE SHE GETS THOSE BEHAVIORS! :) If she doesn't get milk immediately, it is all over! She howls like a banshee and it is tough to calm her after that. She's learning though...

She's a great sleeper so far and makes the best facial expressions. She's very curious and seems to have good hand-eye coordination (Adam is happy because she tends to favor her right hand over left....whatever....left handed people are cool too, gosh!)

We're off!

Hey everyone! It is about 5:30am in FL and Baby Rosenbaum decided that May 3rd is a fine day for a birthday. (At least we hope baby picked the 3rd and not the 4th!)

Anyways, we're probably going to head to the hospital in an hour or two---we need to stop for gas and stop at school first if possible. We may not leave that soon, but as far as I can tell, things are moving along well! Yippee!

Funny side note: I finally woke Adam up at 5:10....told him no rush, but if he wants to shower/shave etc. then he should get up. So, in a slightly frazzled state of half-sleep/half-awakeness, he goes into the bathroom, puts ON deoderant, then gets in the shower. Poor guy. I think I wanted some company...otherwise he probably could sleep a little longer.

Anyways, updates coming soon! Have a GREAT day! :)

According to the professionals...

My due date is officially here on Monday......

Since baby (and mom) is quite comfortable, we're headed off to Leu Gardens on Monday morning.... daddy has to work anyways and it is a good chance to get some walking in.....lots of it! (Besides that, it is FREE ADMISSION on Mondays, which rocks!) It is going to be a high of 83 degrees tomorrow....a delightful day for walking in the park!

Checkup

My doctor's appt. this morning went as well as expected. I met with Dr. Crider today (which I was glad to do to get a different opinion from Dr. Marcantel---although we like them both). At first, they were concerned that my blood pressure had spiked. Last time it was 120/70, today they measured 144/78----but then we took it again and it was only 122/70. Nothing bad!

Dr. Crider was very honest about his feelings on induction. He feels that there is no medical reason to induce next week, however he is concerned if we DON'T have the baby next week. So, he HIGHLY recommended going ahead and scheduling an induction for the beginning of the following week. This would allow me to go past my due date and give baby a chance to come naturally, while not getting into "medical issues" of a too big baby. He feels that my chances of having to have a C-section would increase dramatically if we let the baby get too big. If we waited until next week's appt. to schedule, I'd be WAY overdue and baby would be 10+lbs.

After listening to his reasons, I made up my mind to let him schedule an induction for the week of May8-12, but I let him pick the date. I still don't necessarily believe in the whole "playing God" thing of inducing, but then, I don't want to have to have a C-Section either. I think we have a good, middle-of-the-road compromise!

He did "separate" or "strip" the membranes when he did the exam today. It is a simple way to perhaps speed up the labor process a little. Basically, stripping the membranes can be described as separating the amniotic sac (bag of waters) from the cervix, thus releasing prostaglandins into the blood stream. It isn't painful, just lots of pressure. Sorry, might be too much info for some, but I find it interesting. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't! Depends completely on if baby "feels like cooperating"!

People have asked about names.....boy's name is picked, girl's name is still on the table.

Have a sunny, Florida day!

39+ weeks!

Time has gone by way too quickly! We've enjoyed this pregnancy every step of the way and consider ourselves so lucky to have a healthy baby growing so well inside.

I'm really feeling great still--albeit my anxiety over having a LARGE baby. I've slept better these past couple of nights than I have for months. Swelling has gone down a little as well...although it isn't as bad as some, it can be annoying!

Today was my first official day off of work. It was bittersweet leaving on Friday, not knowing what is in store for me next year, but the R&R is wonderful! I slept in this morning, did some housework and ran some errands. Got a lot accomplished!

Next Dr's. appt. is on Thursday morning....we'll keep you all posted on any changing events!

To Induce or Not to Induce?

We had our 38 week checkup today and the doc is already talking about scheduling an induction if baby doesn't come next week. According to them, baby is already topping out close to 8lbs.... Thanks, Adam's genes. Geez.

I'm not sure how I feel about induction. My instincts say, "NO WAY!" I don't want to "schedule" baby's birthday. I think some things should be left in God's hands. I also REALLY want to have the natural birth. But, on the other hand, I also don't want a gazillion lb. baby that looks like a 3 month old. I know, I know, as long as baby is healthy....

On other fronts, I can't have a med free delivery as previously planned. Bummer. I'm not adjusting well to that right now, because I was totally psyched to have a completely natural delivery. I have to have an IV for 2 reasons....one....my heart murmur. If I were to have to have an emergency C-section, I'd have to have the meds ahead of time. Also, I tested positive to Group B Strep so I have to have antibiotics for that as well. Hope they can find my veins. That's always the biggest drama.

Not much else---ultrasound looked good...baby is in the correct position (Yea!)
Still 1-2cm dilated but more than 75% effaced.
BP is 120/70
Baby's heart rate is steady and strong, but slowing down a little which indicates a larger sized baby. (Didn't know that one!)

Last day of work is on Friday---looking forward to some time w/o 170 kids so I can prepare mentally for 1 of our own.

CONGRATULATIONS TO SCOTT AND KATHY ON THE NEWS THAT THEY ARE EXPECTING!

ALSO, CONGRATULATIONS TO NATE AND BROOKE AS THEY FOUND OUT THEY ARE HAVING IDENTICAL TWINS! WOW!

In other news, Katie Holmes, Brooke Shields, Gweneth Paltrow, Gwen Stefani, Angelina Jolie and I are all due within 1 day of each other. Oh, but Katie and Brooke had their babies yesterday. Both girls.... "Suni" and "Something else really weird".

Taking thoughts....if the option comes up next Thursday, do we schedule an induction or not?

Optimistic?

Hi everyone--

We're so very excited as time is ticking fast! I'm down to my last 4 days of work and then hopefully I'll have some time off before baby arrives.

The ultrasound did not get done last week due to some backups, but will be done tomorrow at 2:15. We'll see the doc at 3:00. Last week, doc estimated the baby to be around 7 lbs. No good. That means that he/she is probably taking after Adam's side of the family. THANKS A LOT! But really, they could be off the mark, so we're (I'm) trying to be optimistic.

Last week, I was dilated 1-2cm still, but about 75% effaced. So, things are progressing. We figure we have between 1-3 weeks left. (or 4...if you are Meg!)

Everything is going well---I've had a cold all weekend, but it is clearing up.
Hope everyone had a great Easter! You were in our thoughts---miss you all!

I'll post tomorrow with more news and maybe a picture.....

Adam's 31st Birthday Celebration!

10 of us went to Buca di Beppo to celebrate Adam's birthday--mmmm.....

I'm pretty sure we each consumed at least a week's worth of calories, but it was INCREDIBLE food!

Even celebrities turned out for the event...

Seth Green was sitting with a group of friends at the table RIGHT BEHIND US! (Too bad the waitress was good at taking our group shot, or he would have been in it.) You may know Seth Green from Austin Powers: Goldmember, Rat Race, That 70's show, Without a Paddle or the Italian Job.

In person, he is SHORT---barely clears 5 ft.!

After we all gorged on food, the wait staff brought out a HUGE, delicious piece of cake (which we all shared) that looked like watermelon. Everyone in the restaurant sang to Adam and he blew out the candelabra candles. Very fun!

Next Friday we're going to go to the beach again (which we did last year for his birthday) because everyone wants to get some sun and volleyball in for the 4 day weekend! Good times, good food, good company!

Kickin' and Squirmin'

I think baby is excited to be in a new position (head down...yea!).
It is a newfound sense of space in the growing tummy de momma. "Kickums McSquiggles" has been doing some sort of bicycle movements for the past couple of days! Very fun, yet much more powerful!

Baby care class is on Tues., April 11
Next Dr's appt. is on Wed., April 12 (includes ultrasound...yea!)

Less Than Happy

Well, another predicament...

Our principal is, well, less than happy that I am taking my full maternity leave (which includes summer and Aug/Sept. as well). Furthermore, the plan was to stay home until January, when 2nd semester starts and then go back either full or part time.

His response was, "I can't guarantee that I'll have a position for you. That's a chance you're going to have to take."

According to my contract, (since I'm tenured), I believe that I can take up to a year's leave of absence and be guaranteed a job at my school, and up to 2 years I would be guaranteed a job in the district (but not necessarily at my school). Apparantly, that is not true. But I think it is...

SO--now we have to decide...do we take our chances and I stay home, or do I go back in Aug.?

Gosh! I think we should move to Europe where they give moms 6 months paid maternity leave.

Update...Probably More Info Than You Want!

We had our 36 week check up today...

It was EXTREMELY busy there today. I'd guess there were several "lunchtime" babies today because the office was more backed up than I've ever seen it. And...apparantly the tourists who visit the water parks sometimes get some nasty lacerations in places too private to mention. Yikes.

But, we REALLY wanted to meet with the doctor today, so we waited....and waited....and soon we were the last people in the waiting room...but alas, the door opened and the nurse called out my name! Yea!

We met with Dr. Marcantel today because Crider was busy with a tourist "accident". The doc said that the maternity ward is moving up to the new 4th floor facility this week--which is great because the new floor is pretty cool---bigger rooms and very pretty!

He went through some of the "when to come to the hospital" things and a little about what to expect from them.

Blood pressure was good.. 117/68 so they're not worried about the swelling that has recently started.

Tested for Group B Strep today, so we'll find that out next week. No biggie...just means antibiotics during delivery if I'm a carrier.

I'm measuring at 37 weeks...I've been toggling between measuring right on and one week ahead, so this wasn't big news.

Doc says I'm about 1-2 cm dilated and 50% effaced. He could feel the baby's head, so that means the THE BABY FINALLY TURNED! (It also means that Adam has been talking to baby's butt...hehehe) (Baby has been laying transverse, or sideways, for a long time now---as of 2 weeks ago, baby was still sideways, causing a little concern.)

He estimates the baby to be between 6-6.5 lbs. which is fine if it's 37 weeks, but maybe a little big if we go by 36 weeks. Of course, the ultrasound next week will tell us a lot more. (I'd like to verify the position as well as the size. Doesn't feel too big...hmmm...)

He pretty much just said that everything looks great now and the baby is well on its way...yea! We're getting excited to meet the little one!

The Greatest Invention!

My FL friends and I have found our new favorite thing....

It's called Dinner Done! It is a professional kitchen (just like those cooking shows) where you spend 2 hours making 8-12 meals for your family (each meal feeds 4-6 people and can be separated into smaller portions).

Everything made can go directly from the freezer to the oven or saute pan!

Basically, you pay $135 and show up...Adam and I get 16-18 meals out of it.

What I love most is the quality of food---these are not hamburgers, people! These are gourmet meals (see this month's menu below!) Also, they do all the prep work (dicing, measuring, etc.) for you ahead of time and they clean everything up at the end. You know what else is great?!?! If you want to alter the seasonings, veggies or anything else, you are free to do so. When you leave the kitchen, you have 8 (or 16) pre-made meals, packaged for the freezer and labeled with side item and wine suggestions.

HOW COOL IS THAT?!?!?!? (Now, I know Adam makes some mean tacos, but at least we'll have more than tacos and noodles when the baby comes!)

This is what I picked to make this month:

Chicken Marbella-chicken with white wine and brown sugar glaze, capers and fruit

Chicken Parmigiana

Gorgonzola Beef Filets-onions, bacon and cheese atop filets

Parmesan Crusted Chicken with Asparagus

Pecan Bourbon Salmon-fresh Atlantic Salmon, brown sugar, pecans, bourbon, apple cider

Spicy Shrimp on Linguine-olive oil, onions, peppers, lemon juice

Teriyaki Pineapple Chicken

Yankee Pot Roast

YUM! YUM! YUM!

I found out they have a similar chain, "Super Suppers" if you want to check it out---no guarantees...the only one I've experienced is "Dinner Done!"

The What Goes Where?

So....we had some extra time on our hands today and decided to decipher the mystery of installing the car seat base. We talked with the infant resource officer for the Kissimmee Police Dept. and found that they do car seat checks every Friday. We figured it would be best if we try to install it first, and then they can either praise us for a job well done or correct our mistakes.

Fast forward to 30 minutes later, where we are up to our knees in manuals...who knew there were that many types of seat belts and fasteners?!?! This clips into that/tightened against this/yadda yadda yadda.

Luckily, we have the new LATCH system in the CRV so it was quite easy (we think) to install the base and seat. Much easier than threading the seat belt through the seat.

On another note, we had a work shower last Sunday. It was an enjoyable time with good food and good company. All I can say now is that our child has more clothes in their room than Adam and I have in our closet. Actually, we received some lovely gifts---we have a nice library of books started and even got a few toys. Since many people decided to buy off the registry, we did end up with some doubles of things---not a prob...we returned stuff to Target and with the extra $$, put it towards a high chair.

Baby is doing well---still squirming about and making us giggle. I'm still pretty comfortable but have some swelling around my left ankle, which the doctor will probably check out on Tuesday, our next appt.

We have had a lovely weekend, the weather is beautiful---Education in the Park was on Sat. (basically a big carnival for schools). Adam was in charge of our school's booth and he did a great job! It was a long day in 86 degree sunshine though. Sat. night was a progressive dinner with our church friends---delicious food! Church and yardwork this morning and then some R&R for the rest of the day!

Make sure and VOTE!

BOYS NAME
GIRLS NAME

Make sure and vote again for both! (We promise we won't change them again!)

So far, in talking with people, we have noticed MAJOR regional differences in name preferences!

If you have any specific opinions (which are welcome, feel free to post or email but please be aware that some still do NOT know the sex of the baby!)

34.75 Weeks...

Baby is almost 5 lbs. now and measures around 18 inches in length. Organs are fully developed at this point---he/she is just working on putting on some of that baby fat. (1/2 lb. per week).

I'm feeling pretty good---not uncomfortable except when a little foot decides to kick rather hard into my ribs. I am getting more tired again, but not as bad as right away in the 1st trimester.

Swelling hasn't been too bad, occasionally my hands/feet will puff up a little. Of course, it probably doesn't help walking around Animal Kingdom or Sea World all day, but hey, I LOVE getting out into the WARM sunshine and getting some exercise!

Wednesday, March 22, 2006

Aughhh!

Ok, our baby just isn't going to have a name. We're completely stressing over it. We haven't found a name we love in 3 years...what actually makes us think we will come up with one in the next 5-6weeks?????

HEEELLLLPPPPPP!!!!!!!

34 weeks...and counting...

We had our 34 week checkup today. Funny...this is the 3rd time Dr. Crider has had to leave to go deliver a baby during our appointment time. It's amazing how quickly they get back though. (Of course, these have all been uncomplicated deliveries). We did read a statistic though that more babies are born on Tuesday than any other day of the week.

Baby's heartbeat is good---in the 140's.
My blood pressure is 110/60 which is fine.
I actually lost 2 lbs. since the last appointment (which is really nothing to be worried about).
Must be all that walking at Animal Kingdom yesterday.

We go back on April 4 for a 36 week checkup, then every Tuesday until the due date. Group B Strep will be tested for at the next appointment.

Things are going well...I've had a few "crampy" feelings which technically are contractions---very normal at this stage. Baby is still breech but has a few more weeks to turn before we start having to worry about that. Many babies keep you guessing until the end...

Top 'O The Mornin' To Ya!

Happy St. Patrick's Day! May you all find the pot of gold at the end of your rainbow!

Today is a wonderful day! It is the day that our spring break starts...
It dawned on me this morning that I only have 18 workdays left....(Easter Break, Spring Break, etc) (Adam only has 32 days)
It is 82 degrees here in beautiful, sunny Orlando...
We (still) get in free to SeaWorld (love those teacher perks)...maybe tomorrow!

Baby is a little kicking machine. My ribs are sufficiently bruised, but I'm happy 'cuz baby is getting stronger and closer to being here every day!

WHAT ARE THEY THINKIN'?

If anyone could have heard the uproar in our household this morning....Whaddya mean they traded Daunte to Miami? Does anybody REALIZE how old Johnson is (37)? Whaddya mean that all they got for Culpepper was a 2nd round draft pick? No other guys? Well, they got rid of Randy and Daunte, what do they plan on doing with the money that was inevitably freed up? The defense isn't great, and now the offense is downright depressing....but hey, at least we have new coaches to coach our non-talent. Are they EVEN TRYING to get a Superbowl win? And on....and on....and on....

Maybe it's not that bad. Maybe our "chance" at a 2nd round pick will yield a quarterback. But...then again....it's a roll of the dice.

Quick 32 Week Update

We had another Dr. appt. yesterday. Everything is going well. Blood pressure is good, baby's heartbeat is strong and steady. Baby is still breech--has a couple of weeks still before they start getting concerned. Instead of laying sideways, baby is sitting up now (from what we can tell without an ultrasound).

Baby's movements are so nice and strong---we're so proud! Seems to have a good sleep/awake cycle so far. Awake between 5:30am-7:00am, 9:00am-11:00am, 1:00pm-3:00pm, 4:45pm-??? I'm sure baby is awake at night too, but never wakes me up...so who knows?!?!?

Friday, March 03, 2006

31 week picture....and on to 32 weeks!

At this stage, baby's tastebuds are developing, weighs about 3.75 lbs. and is over 16 inches long!

We've had a great time actually seeing the baby roll around, instead of just feeling him/her. I have been able to see little thumps for awhile, but those big rolls are AMAZING! Lovin' it!

Can't believe we're moving into week 32 already. It's crazy! Now, I just have to learn to deal with the fact that I may possibly never sleep again.... I LOVE SLEEPING!

Our little soccer player/kung fu master sends kicks of love out to all of you and is looking forward to meeting everyone!

Suggestions...

My coworkers would like to give me a baby shower at the end of March. They'd like to focus mainly on toys and books for baby, since we don't have any yet.

I'd like some suggestions of stuff to register for....

What are your childrens' favorite toys/books?
What are YOUR favorite childhood toys/books?

You get the idea. If you know of any "must haves", let us know! Thanks!

Not for the weak of stomach...

Aaahh....pregnancy nose....you know the one...with that glorious heightened sense of smell....

Well, have I got a story for you!

Yesterday was our huge state FCAT testing. All started out well as the students came in, had a snack breakfast and the testing window starts. Halfway through the first test, a student raised her hand and asked to use the bathroom because she felt ill. OK--since there were 3 adults in the room, I could take her out. A few minutes later, she was fine and went back to finish her test. Well, as soon as she finished the last question on her test and closed the test booklet, she proceeds to throw up, yes, hurl, all over the test documents, desk, her books, clothes, everything. We're talking some major projectile stuff here. The other 8 students around her had to lift their feet off the floor to keep their shoes clean.

As soon as I smelled her lovely breakfast...I was done. No more. Couldn't bear to be in that room. Someone else had to cover my class for the remainder of the day. I'm not sure what is worse, the actual upchuck or the orange sprinkle stuff they put on it. Ugh. I'm gagging thinking about it. I went in to get my stuff at the end of the day and I could still smell it. This morning, I could still smell it---so someone had to cover my class again today. Yikes.

The funny thing is that we actually had to double bag her test documents and ship them over to district office to be shredded. That is going to be a RUDE box to open and attempt to shred.

Now instead of teaching/test administering today, I get to put labels on all the test documents. That is not so fun...but at least it smells good in here!

Baby is doing GREAT! Daddy and grandpa put the crib together this weekend and grandma bought some cute clothes and 2 stuffed animals! (She/He's flipping 'round and 'round with excitement! Thanks!)

30 Week Checkup

Had a doctors appt. yesterday---

My blood pressure was good (a little high for me at 110/60, but apparantly that is normal).
Baby's heartbeat is beating strong :)

Blood work for diabetes came back fine...well under the "140" limit which is good news. Doctor is concerned with anemia though, as it came back a few points shy of what is "acceptable". He's not overly concerned, as it is only a few points, but suggested that I make sure and get even more iron in my diet (besides the vitamins).

Baby must have gone through a growth spurt last time, because I'm measuring right on 30 weeks now (whew).

After the appointment, we had our maternity unit tour. That was interesting as we got to see the rooms (all private), ask lots of questions and meet one of the wonderful lactation consultants.

That's all the news for now! Have a great day!

Saturday, February 18, 2006

Yikes!

The pictures are getting scarier! This is ALL OF ME...30 weeks (or 32 weeks, depending on which due date you feel like using...). It feels like my body just exploded over night! (Although it really doesn't seem bad when covered with a shirt...) Baby is pushing up into my diaphragm, so it is quite hard to breathe right now. Otherwise, things are going well. Adam and I are getting more excited to meet this little one everyday! The movements are no longer little flutters, but bigger, whomping ones. Lots of fun! We are going back to the doctor on Tuesday and also tour the maternity ward on Tues. Oh, and we're so proud of ourselves to have figured out how to set up the pack'n'play. (You can admire our work if you can see your way around the monstrosity that is my belly!)

Imb Sick.

Vitamins are great, but sometimes the cold still gets the best of you. Too bad I can't call in....'cuz IMB SICK. I may have to call the doctor and find out what meds are safe to take...not sure I can kick this without 'em. Yucky, scratchy sore throat and my head feels like it is going to explode! Pew.

A Good Weekend!

Adam and I had a good weekend! We chaperoned the Valentine's Day dance on Friday (of course, Adam had to dance a little too!). When we got home Friday night, we enjoyed a nice, relaxing dinner and watched a few episodes of Lost (trying to catch up!). Sleeping in late on Sat. morning was a blessing--we're really trying to take advantage of quiet mornings and no alarm clocks now...we'll have an automatic wakeup call in May. Pajamas were the dress code of the day...it was chilly and rainy here...a good day to curl up with a book! Later on Sat. night we went to our church potluck and played Bunco (very fun dice game!). Sun. morning we went to church and then went to pick up another piece of the baby's furniture (changing table/dresser). We need to pick up the crib still, but need to find a vehicle to do so. Maybe next weekend.

We have a 4 day work week because Rodeo Day is on Friday. Yes, you heard it, Rodeo Day. Central FL is actually one of the largest rodeo areas of the U.S. I think we should go---and root for the bulls. I just want to experience it once...even though I think it will be corny!

Other than that, we're looking forward to Ron and Kay coming down at the end of February. Oh, and the Strawberry Festival is coming up too---yummy!

Have a wonderful week! Stay warm! (It was only 33 degrees this morning with a high of 48 here....ok, not cold by your standards, but COLD for here!)

28.5 Weeks...and other random stuff.

Well, here's some pictures. My belly doesn't have that nice round shape---baby's head is on top which makes the top of my belly stick out further than the rest. Kinda looks funny! Also, it looks like I've gained about 100 lbs. in this picture, but it has only been 19 lbs...I swear! It's just not as cute as Meg's basketball belly :) (See her blog pictures---linked on the left!).

Oh, I don't think I shared before, but at the last ultrasound (end of Jan.), we got to see baby opening and closing his/her eyes. That was too cool!

Baby is doing fine---very active during regular intervals of the day. He/She weighs about 2.4 lbs. and is about 15.25 inches long!

The Case of the Disappearing Belly Button...

Quickly, oh so quickly, the button is fading away. Where is it going? Is there some magical belly button land? A few more weeks and the BB will have relocated to it's new home. Odd how you get attached to something that you never use. If you know where I can find it, report it to 1-800-got-baby immediately. Thank you.

Oh, and the poll boxes have changed, so make sure you vote!

27 weeks!

Everything went well today at the Dr's. Ultrasound looked good---we'll do one more much closer to the due date. Baby is still breach, but there is plenty of time to turn yet. Heartbeat sounds good--all my vitals are good too (my blood pressure went back up a little...it was 96 last time and is up to 104---(top number)---so that is better.)

The sugary Orange flavored stuff wasn't too bad---tastes like Orange Crush with a couple of extra tablespoons of sugar. Hopefully that little test comes out ok, because I hate having my blood drawn.

We preregistered our paperwork to be checked into the hospital in May...or maybe April now. They don't actually change the due dates, but Dr. Crider says the baby is measuring to be due around April 23 instead....now, that doesn't mean the baby will be ready to come out then so we're maintaining a May 2 due date. Of course, this may mean we have a bigger baby. yikes! Thanks a lot Adam! (Just kiddin'--although he WAS 9lbs 6oz taken out a week early).

We will see him again on Feb. 21 (3 weeks) which will be the 30 week checkup. After that, we'll see him every 2 weeks until baby is born.

After the appointment, we dined on some fantastic Pizzeria Uno deep dish tonight while mulling over names...again.

All in all, a great day!

Worth Passing On...

Alison had this poem on her blog today, and I feel that it is worth posting on mine as well. It makes you remember what is truly important....family, CHILDREN, friends....take time for them. The other stuff will still be around later!

"Mother oh Mother, come shake out your cloth
Empty the dustpan, poison the moth,
Hang out the washing and butter the bread
Sew on a button and make up a bed.

Where is the mother whose house is so shocking?
She's up in the nursery, blissfully rocking.

Oh, I've grown as shiftless as Little Boy Blue
(Lullaby, rockabye, lullaby loo)
Dishes are waiting and bills are past due
(pat-a-cake, darling, and peek, peekaboo)

The shopping's not done and there's nothing for stew
And out in the hard there's a hullabaloo
But I'm playing Kanga and this is my Roo
Look! Aren't her eyes the most wonderful hue?

The cleaning and scrubbing will wait till tomorrow
For children grow up, as I've learned to my sorrow
So quiet down, cobwebs; dust, go to sleep
I'm rocking my baby and babies don't keep."

Monday, January 30, 2006

Ok, baby completely shifted position...

Yikes!

Baby has been sitting pretty far back inside...not too "out front" yet. Well, maybe baby got bored with the current living situation, because all of a sudden during my 8th block class today, baby moved COMPETELY out front---you couldn't imagine how hard my tummy got and how fast. Wow! That's new!

We're lovin' the feeling of baby's movements...he/she especially loves the relaxation/breathing techniques we've been practicing. It is one of his/her most mobile parts of the day! (Adam likes the relaxation stuff too---it's wonderful on stressful days!)

Names...names...names....

Ok,

Boys---Darren, Erik, Gavin or Hayden (middle names---Grant, Seth, James)

Girls---Hannah Grace, Megan Elise, Kira Ann, Ava Claire, Heather, Mia, Abigail, Kari, Haylie...

We painted the baby's room this weekend...what color? I CAN'T TELL YOU BECAUSE SOME PEOPLE DON'T KNOW BABY'S SEX! (But, it is absolutely PERFECT!)

Doctor's Appointment tomorrow---hopefully a good update!

Friday, January 27, 2006

Ok, so I like
Ava Claire Rosenbaum....

Is it really too close to the whole Adam and Eve thing?

A Parent's Promise...

I promise to love you-unconditionally

I promise to protect you-for your pain hurts me more than my own

I promise to guard and to guide you-materially, mentally and morally

I promise to foster soundness and strength-in your health, your head and your heart

I promise to catch you doing things right and let you do things your way no matter how messy or or asymmetrical

I promise to be a good example always-for there's no telling what act ot attribute you might emulate

I promise to be honest, open and direct

I promise to be a pillar of courage and a pillow of comfort

I promise to explore the world with you, explain the world to you, and expect the world of you

I promise to be a fortress in which you can hide, a friend in whom you can confide, and a parent in whose heart you'll find love and in whose eyes you find pride.

Our baby...the contortionist!

A foot! Does it look like Adam's narrow feet????

We had another ultrasound today...but didn't get any other good pictures of Baby R. I just love this little foot though! Somehow, the baby had his/her hands and feet curled around by his/her head (picture a baby folded in half). So, once again...not too good of facial shots. I can't believe a baby would actually be comfortable in that position, but baby slept soundly through the entire ultrasound. The U/S technician tried bouncing the baby around so that she could get a good spinal shot which was the whole reason why we had this ultrasound in the first place...we hope the ones she got are good enough...

Baby is certainly getting bigger--seems to take up the entire belly area now instead of just floating around. I haven't gained anymore weight though...in fact, I lost a few pounds since last visit. (Of course, that might have been due to the holiday binge eatingfest.)

Anyways, we DID find out if we'll be dressing our baby in blue or pink, so that was super exciting. It hit us like a ton of bricks tonight as we talked about the future with baby. Lots of fun--laughter, tears, joy!

Pep Talk...

The big day baby! Your time to shine in all your nude-ster glory! Don't be camera shy--the video will be rolling! Mommy and daddy are so excited to see how you've grown and developed--it's amazing how much love we have for you even though we haven't even met you! You've already got both of us wrapped around your tiny little finger!

Dr. Marcantel and Dr. Crider really need some good pictures of your face and spine, so be an angel and let them get some good shots. That might mean that you can't suck your thumb for a few minutes...ok?

We're struggling to find the best name for you, so if you could cooperate and point us in the right direction, we'd be grateful! Just let us know---dinosaurs or butterflies...?

We love you! See you later today!

Interesting Stuff...

We discovered so much at our class last night. The guys asked a lot of good questions---it is interesting to see what they are interested/concerned about....very different from us mothers at times! The instructor took us through all of the phases/stages of labor and what we should be doing at each stage, as well as what our partner should do.

Since our instructor is familiar with each hospital's procedures, we were able to ask very specific questions (such as whether they will allow us to eat/drink/etc or if they have bathtubs/showers) and whether our doctors would push for induction/meds./etc. Very helpful!

We also learned that it is not very hard to guarantee that your baby is positioned right for labor--basically, the head and spine are the heaviest on a baby, so you want the head down and the spine towards your front. (No sunny side up babies!) Anyways, there are very specific and easy things you can do to prevent a sunny-side up baby. One of them is to avoid sitting in reclining chairs all the time--gravity will push baby around to back. In history, women did not have sunny-side up babies at all.....they sat in straight back chairs and scrubbed floors on their knees! Gravity can do amazing things!

For more info...an interesting site is www.spinningbabies.com
It also tells you how to map where your baby is!

SOrry--probably not interesting to you already mothers and those who aren't expecting...but I find it absolutely fascinating how modern medical marvels actually impede the natural childbirth process!

Names...anyone...anyone....???

Ok, we have boys names narrowed down (to 3 decent ones, although not sure from there). HOWEVER, we aren't very far on girls names...ok, so we MIGHT have some middle names, but are not satisfied with any 1st names. We'd like to have 2 of each so that we have some good choices based on what baby looks like (and what sex it is, of course).

Too trendy....too long....too old-ladyish....too little kid-ish....

We like Eve and Ava....Adam and Eve??? Don't think so!

Suggestions welcome here!!!!!

25 Weeks!

Time is flying by! Baby 'baum is doing well--not much new since the last blog! Baby seems to find my bladder as the most comfortable resting spot. I'm sure that will be more and more pleasant as baby gets bigger. By the way, baby is a foot long now! Wow! (Sounds like a sub sandwich!) He/She is weighing in at 1.5-2 lbs! The last few weeks have been spent acquiring fat cells underneath the skin, giving baby that little "chunkster baby" look! We can hardly wait for next Tuesday's ultrasound!

Hypno Class--1st session

AMAZING!

I love the little class (there are 3 couples). The whole philosophy behind hypnobirthing makes so much sense---scientifically and otherwise! What I like about it (besides that hopefully it will help in an unmedicated birth) is that the tools and techniques can be applied to most areas of your life. Ex: How to quickly relax when someone/something has you stressed or upset.

One of the mothers in the group is from Barrington, IL---grew up 10 minutes away from me...graduated in '94 also!

The other mother is a middle school teacher and volleyball coach in Orange County (we're in Osceola County). All three mothers are die-hard Cubs fans. Can you believe it?!?!?!

Anyways, I have gotten many useful handouts and CDs already...I'd love to share more, maybe next week!

Fun Pic!

Adam at the Hawaiian Christmas Party---say it ain't so....the macarena, Adam????!!!???!!!

Wednesday, January 11, 2006

A Soccer Player???

Kicky McSquiggles is doing great! Seems to like music, volleyball practice, football (always movin' during the games) and the sound of daddy's voice. He/She has a good sleep schedule so far (keep those fingers crossed) as he/she is awake during the day and sleeps well at night. (Of course, I could just be sleeping through baby's playtime!!!)

Still a little stinker though, as Adam has only felt the baby twice and they were weak little kicks. Baby LOVES moving as long as you don't touch the belly---then baby stops. Go figure....couldn't be OUR child doing that....nah....

We start our hypnobirth class tomorrow night right after volleyball. We're looking forward to it!

23.5 week appt.

We went to see Dr. Marcantel yesterday for our monthly appointment and to get the test results and u/s results.

All of the bloodwork came back fine :)

He listed off all of the wonderful little organs (heart, spleen, kidneys, etc.)...everything looked good on the ultrasound.

I've gained 14 pounds, which is right on target for 23 weeks, but the baby is measuring big right now. Actually, yesterday I measured 1.5 cm above what I should be at. Good news is that it is all baby....bad news is that it is all baby. The doctor mentioned that the most recent u/s actually shows a due date of 4/27 instead of 5/2 (which, we know is ahead of schedule because we know the exact conception date). Either that, or Dr. Marcantel said we might have a bigger baby OR baby just went through a big growth spurt and everything will even out eventually.

He said we have a very active baby---he had trouble following the baby's heartbeat 'cuz he/she kept moving so much. Good thing it's active during the day and quiet at night so far.

The ultrasound tech did not good still shots of the spine (because of baby's position) or the face (baby preferred to suck his/her thumb the whole time) so Dr. Marcantel scheduled us for another ultrasound on Tues., Jan. 24 @ 3:00. (Adam was excited because it also gives us a second chance to find out the sex----he was scheming on how to get the Dr. to request another one so we didn't have to pay....)

In summation, all is good--blood pressure is low (98/54). Next appointment we'll go over the most recent ultrasound results and I'll have to drink the sugar stuff for the diabetes test. Yuck. Is it gross?

Tuesday, January 03, 2006

Oh what fun it is to go....back to work....

Well, it's January 3---back to the grind!

We had a wonderful two week break...saw lots of family, were constantly on the move, received some wonderful gifts, enjoyed way too much food and played lots of fun games!

Baby 'Baum made a haul this Xmas season---got Christmas gifts and shower gifts---the room is taking shape as a nursery now instead of just an empty room! (With some furniture, I'm sure reality will hit us!) Thanks everybody!

Some things we enjoyed:
1. Seeing family and friends
2. Xmas celebrations
3. Rockettes Xmas Spectacular in Minneapolis
4. The Vikings game
5. Deep Dish pizza from Chi-town (Lou Malnati's AND Gino's East)
6. Walking downtown Chicago in the cold/rain 8+ city blocks to see the light in our nieces eyes as we visit the American Girl Store.
7. The baby shower
8. New Year's Eve with friends in Minneapolis---lots of little ones this year and more next year!

There was so much more--too many blessings to list!

Baby must be a Vikings fan---VERY ACTIVE during the game (we'd like to think it is not just because of the noise in the dome...). Saw some cute Vikings gear but since we're not sure if boy/girl yet, COULDN'T buy anything! :(

We'll post some new pictures soon---belly is finally getting a little bigger...at least you can tell I'm pregnant now :)

Enjoy 2006!
